Pre-Licensing Class

April 7, 2009

We went to our first of three classes at our foster care/adoption agency on Saturday. It was pretty informative although D and I felt ahead of the game because of all that we have learned from Foster Parenting Podcasts. There were four other couples in the class with us. It was really encouraging to hear some of their reasons for wanting to become foster parents. One couple in the room is there specifically for the purpose of getting a child with either autism or Down syndrome. They know that these children get forgotten about and they feel like they can provide a good home for at least one of them. I felt like hugging them.

We watched a few videos on safe sleep, attachment and common issues with foster children. We also did a lot of paperwork and went over some of the qualifications for a foster home. It looks like we are going to have to have a little work done in our basement since we want to use it as a recreation area.

Our next class in not until June. In the meantime, I think we will get working on getting our basement ready and filling out more paperwork. We also need to go get fingerprinted and become CPR certified. Lots to do but we know it will be worth it.

Have I already said that I look forward to being an aunt to your child(ren)? I want you to know that I pray for you two as you look to adopt! I am pretty excited!
